Britain is the largest single foreign investor in Azerbaijan. We would like to see that increase, and welcome measures to improve the business climate in Azerbaijan, particularly in the non oil and gas sector.

The former Prime Minister Tony Blair has launched a global initiative (The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative) to assist countries that are rich in natural resources to manage them in a transparent way. We are delighted that Azerbaijan has chosen to be our partner in this, and was the first ever country to produce a report under this initiative.

The British Embassy actively supports a wide range of measure to help Azerbaijan in it's attempts to improve it's political and economic structures. We provided technical support to the Central Election Commission during the November 2005 Parliamentary elections providing for example, transparent ballot boxes. The UK also provided substantial numbers of election observers through the OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission. We were delighted to announce in August 2006 that the Foreign and Commonwealth had agreed to fund a major capacity building project with the National Parliament of Azerbaijan.
