BRITISH PARLIAMENT DEBATES BELARUS

On 16 July the British House of Commons held a wide-ranging debate on Belarus. Mark Pritchard (Conservative) opened the debate. Kim Howells, Minister of State at the Foreign Office, replied for the government. Mark Francois, Conservative Party Shadow Minister for Europe and Jo Swinson, Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, also spoke.
This event attracted much interest, and significantly raised the level of parliamentary engagement on Belarus. Mr Howells concluded by saying he hoped there might be a further debate on the subject following Belarusian parliamentary elections in September.

BRITISH EMBASSY DEEPENS SUPPORT TO CHERNOBYL CHILDREN

Every year, 3,500 Chernobyl children travel to the UK for respite holidays organised by British charities. Every such child gets a gratis visa. And, following the successful introduction of biometric visas last September, the Embassy developed a unique project to take biometric data from children living in radiation-affected regions, so they do not have to come to Minsk. No other British Embassy does this.
